How to get listed in Google’s Business Directory

Google Process Server SearchIf you’re a process server or private investigator and you’re not listed in Google’s local business directory, you need to be. You’ve probably seen the directory. It appears at the top of the page (under sponsored listings) when conducting a search that includes a city by name or a zip code. If it doesn’t appear yet for your city it will sooner or later because it’s expanding at a phenomenal rate.

If your business is already listed in the directory you can unlock your local listing on Google and make changes to the information, to do so click on “more info” next to your business listing and then click on “Business owner?”. This will take you to Google’s business center where you can sign up to edit your listing. Authenticating you as the owner involves waiting for Google to send a letter to the address on the listing with a pin number.

Getting listed in Google’s business directory is easy. Click on http://www.google.com/local/add and sign into your Google account.  If you don’t have an account click on the “Sign up now” button. Once you’ve logged into the business center the screen below will appear. Fill out all of the fields shown (you can make changes later if you need to). Make the first category you choose the category that best describes your business. Be careful on adding additional categories, you don’t want to get busted for spamming your website across categories not related to the services you provide (listing your process serving firm under “attorneys” might get some hits but it’s a bad idea).

Google's add business page
If Google finds that your listing is already in their directory you will be given the opportunity to claim it on the next screen. After that you will be taken to a screen where you can review your listing and add additional information. This includes entering a list of details about your business…. use this section for short items like “Licensed & Insured”, “Nationwide Service Available”, “Court Services”, etc. You will also have the opportunity to add photos. The first photo you upload is the photo that will show up on the list when people are browsing listings in your area (use your logo here).

Once you’ve completed the above Google’s computer system will call the phone number used in your listing and give you a pin number that’s used in the last screen shown below. If you fail to get the call simply click on “request verification” as seen below and Google will call your phone again.

Now that your done it’s a wait and see game as to when your firm will start showing up in the directory. Once you do appear you’ll notice there is a section where customers can leave a review. Send clients a link to the page where they can post a review:

eBay Classified free classified ads

Click here to visit eBay Classifieds.com. The site offers free classified ads including listings under “Legal & Lawyer” (the section process servers and private investigators should advertise in). Like Craig’s list, eBay Classifieds only includes major cities across the United States, many cities under 100,000 don’t appear on the site. eBay Classifieds states they have over 7 million unique visitors each month.

To place an ad you first need to navigate to the location you provide services to and then click on the “Post your free ad” button on the top right. Kijiji allows uploading of multiple images. The size of the images you can display is a  large 499px X 373px. The site does not require registration to place an ad but it does require verification after you have placed the ad (make sure you use a valid email address that you check often). Too many keywords or too much text will get your ad deleted.

Following is an example of what the ad placement process looks like:

ClassifiedAds.com free classified ads

Free advertising for attorneys, process servers & private investigatorsClassifiedads.com is a Nationwide classified ad site with a section for “Legal Services” that is used by attorneys, process servers, private investigators and others in the profession.

Placing an ad is about as simple and quick as it gets. No registration is required. To place an ad you need to click on “Change location” at the top right on the home page, browse to the area where you want to place an ad and then click on “Post a free ad”. After that all you need to do is choose a category and then a screen will open up where you can place your ad.

Classifiedads.com let’s you use html and up to 5 pictures in your ad. There is no preview before posting but once you’ve placed your ad you will get an email with a link for editing your ad (it will send you to a page where you assign a password), which you’ll probably need if you use html in your ad because it doesn’t seem to always come out exactly the way you would expect.

Remember, never copy and paste text from your web site or text from other places you’ve placed ads. Varying the text you use to describe your business and your services on sites like classifiedads.com should help with your search ranking, duplicating the same material over and over on different sites could be a wasted effort and in the worst case scenario it could have a negative impact on your rankings.

Counsel.net free classified ads

Counsel.net has a FREE classified ad section for private investigators and another section for process servers. Ads placed here show up frequently on Google searches, especially when doing searches for a private investigator or process server in a specific city.

Click on the menu selection “Classifieds” and choose the category you want to place your ad in. No registration is required. The system asks for the title of your ad, an email address, the url for an image you want displayed (optional) and a link (optional) to your web site and a description (as long as you want). Counsel.net does not allow you to use links to .info domains, not sure why but if you try using a .info domain in your link it sends you to a page on the FBI’s website.

Unlike backpage.com or kijiji.com images used in ads on counsel.net need to be hosted on another server. If you have an image you want to place in your ad but don’t have the image on the internet yet simply upload it to tinypic.com and use the “Direct Link for Layouts” code (seen on the left side of tinypic.com after you upload a picture).

Tips for content in your ad:

Do not cut-n-paste text from your website, be a bit creative so the search engines do not pick up on duplicate content. Use keywords (but don’t ovedue it)  in “Services offered”, “Name/Location” and in the description field. You don’t need to use “Private Investigator” in the “Services offered” field because that term is placed there automatically by counsel.net.

The following shows the placement of a sample ad on counsel.net:

Craig’s List free classified ads

Click image to visit Craig's List

Craig’s List offers free advertising in most section and cities under the category “Legal Services”. In most locations you will need to first register before placing an ad in “Legal Services”. This requires submitting a valid email address and a phone number where they can either text you or leave a message with a code you will need to enter on the site.

The legal services category on Craig’s list probably gets more traffic then any other free classified ad site. You will also notice a lot of attorneys place ads  in larger cities which helps draw traffic to the site.

Tips for placing an ad on Craig’s list:

Include a short phrase in the title that describes your service (i.e.: “Process Server” “Private Investigator”). Also include it in your description. The above two examples are what people actually use the most when searching Google for those services, “investigation company” or “process serving company” are used far less often.

In the location field make sure you do not use something like “California”, narrow it down to either a County or better yet a city that you want to get business in. Individuals looking for a private investigator in Los Angeles are not going to use the word California when conducting a search (remember these listings will show up on Google searches).
